Because of the geographic location that includes different live zones, Monteverde is one of the places with the highest biodiversity in the world.
In Monteverde we can find around 430 species of birds, almost half of the total bird species of Costa Rica, including the famous Resplendent Quetzal – one of most wonderful bird in world. This bird may be sighted almost during the whole year, especially around its reproduction period, February to April. Besides the fact that it is a majestic bird to observe, it’s also a seed disperser of one of the biggest tree families in the cloud forest, wild avocados. It’s also an endangered specie.
You can also see or hear in Monteverde the spectacular Three Wattled Bellbird, a bird with one of the louderst bird calls in the world; the sound can be heard from over a kilometer away. These are only two of many beautiful birds that you could see around the area.
Monteverde is also, the home of over 100 species of mammals, including the lazy two toed sloth (an animal with an amazing natural history), 3 species of monkeys and many different bat species.
And also more than 100 species of amphibians and reptiles (most of this wildlife is active at night).
Although there is an unknown number of species of insects, Monteverde is home to around 600 species of butterflies and moths
